Build a Bio that Attracts More Customers with Boss Lady Bio

And don’t feel like you have to have a perfect photo. Use your phone to set it up and then fix them later.

How to Use Clubhouse to Expand Your Network

Are you on Clubhouse yet?

It is an audio-only platform established in 2020 that makes it relatively easy for you to showcase your expertise, become known in your field, and expand your network of peers and dream clients. With only 10 million members, compared with 689 million on TikTok, 740 million on LinkedIn, 1 billion on Instagram, and 2.85 billion on Facebook, and rooms divided by topics, it’s easier to get people to recognize your name. This is your opportunity to be real, authentic, and in the moment, without the pressure of video.

Whether you have yet to join, or you’re already in but not yet maximizing the platform, these three tips offered by resident AMSE Clubhouse expert Amie Glazier will help you get on your way to becoming a superuser. CHOOSE A DISTINCTIVE PROFILE PHOTO

When Amie introduces herself, she gives her name and references the blue and white polkadot dress she’s wearing. This helps people navigate the room and encourages them to click through to her bio to learn more about her. Make sure you choose a photo you like because it’s better not to change it once people start to recognize it.

CAREFULLY CRAFT YOUR BIO

Your Clubhouse bio is key to finding people that care about the same things you do, helping them find you, and then letting them know how to connect with you more. Self-promotion is discouraged when speaking in a Clubhouse room, but other people in the room are likely to tap on your image to see your bio when you’re speaking. Your bio is a blank slate where you can promote away, letting people know about your brand, what you’re offering, and where they can find you.

Keywords listed in your bio help you show up in a search. For example, if you’re interested in connecting with other military spouses, putting “military spouse” in your bio is important to help searchers find you. And, that’s how you can find your people. You can also ping people to join a room by using keywords. That can help you invite people to your rooms, and if you include the words in your bio, you’ll get a notice when people are discussing topics of interest to you.

Amie’s bio (@amieglazier) is a great example to follow if you’re looking for inspiration. She prominently places important keywords and uses friendly formatting with plenty of emojis.

Elements she includes are:

●      Overarching titles of what she does professionally

●      Military Spouse Entrepreneur (keywords!)

●      Statement of credibility helping people trust what she has to say

●      Where and when people can find rooms she hosts on Clubhouse

●      An ask to connect on a project she’s working on

●      A promo for her business along with the social handle and website

●      A promo for the AMSE chapter she leads along with the email address and website

●      How to connect with her including her email address and where to find her on LinkedIn and Instagram

●      How to engage with her on Clubhouse including rooms to ping her about and topics she’s happy to co-moderate

●      A short bio about her

Your bio will definitely look different depending on your needs, priorities, and affiliations, but Amie’s well-rounded example can offer you ideas of what’s possible.

SPEAK UP

Clubhouse is designed for you to join a room as you’re going about life so it’s easy to be a passive participant. However, if you want to expand your network by building your personal and business brand, raise your hand to be invited on stage. This is a huge difference between Clubhouse and a podcast. You get to participate in the conversation and moderators are usually pretty methodical about letting those up on stage know when it’s their turn to speak. You’ll have the opportunity to ask a question or share a tip.

If you speak regularly on a topic, moderators and participants will start to remember you. If people like what you say, they’ll follow you and check out your bio. Moderators may even ping you into a room when they have a question about your area of expertise. Amie says, “Speak up in every single room you’re in when you have something relevant to say. You have a voice. You have valuable gems to add to a room.”

The “3S” Method for Using Your Social Media Channels

Social media allows business owners to connect with customers online. But how do you choose the right strategy for your business?

Whether you’re starting or expanding your online footprint, knowing how to make social media work for you can be overwhelming. There are so many channels, so many platforms, and so much noise – it’s sometimes hard to know where to start.

Once you’ve identified your go-to social media channels for marketing your business, choosing how to use your social media channels is your next step. My “3S” Method will help you get clear.

Getting started with this method requires you to take the high-level perspective of the social media channels you use for your business and group them according to how you intend to use them. Consistency is key on social media and consistency doesn’t happen without a plan. 

The first S is “Staple.”

These are the channels that you use all the time, for all of your content in its full-length form. These are the channels where you publish and engage most often because you know that the bulk of your target audience is active on the platform. For example, Facebook has the largest user base with 2.8 billion monthly active users, and more than half visiting the site daily. If you recognize that your intended customers use Facebook on a regular basis, this channel will constitute a staple channel for your business. Your content would focus on brand building and generating leads. 

The second S is “Serial.”

These are the channels where you share abbreviated versions of your full-length content. The goal is to amplify the messages you’re already creating, allowing you to be as efficient and productive as possible with your content. For example, if you create videos for your brand Youtube channel, you could publish snippets of those videos on your serial channels as a way to drive views. 

The final S is “Supplement.”

These would be considered the add-on channels that you use to monitor industry-related conversations, keep an eye on your competition, or research growth opportunities for your brand. The channels in this category would have the least amount of publishing and engagement for your business, and that’s okay. The goal is to have a passive presence and be a “fly on the wall.” For example, if there is a popular TV show related to your industry, searching hashtags on Twitter would be a great way to find out what viewers think and explore ways to meet their needs.

Most importantly, the best way to be consistent and successful with your social media marketing is to make a plan.

How Secure Is Your Business? Cybersecurity Tips for Entrepreneurs

While the internet has made it easier for military spouses to become entrepreneurs, it has also come with a few challenges. 

We immediately think of the moving and instability of military life as a challenge to entrepreneurship, but a large (and often overlooked) challenge is the risk of a cybersecurity attack. This can compromise the reputation and financial stability of your organization, brand, and all your hard work.  

We have all heard of OPSEC and sayings such as, “Loose tweets sink fleets. “ However, cyber threats are just as important in making sure your organization keeps growing safely.  

Here are some expert tips that you can implement to maintain your cybersecurity:

1. As military spouses, we use social media to connect to our families states away; as entrepreneurs, we use it to grow our business. We tend to be early adopters of social media, knowing the power of staying connected. However, cyber-vandalism can be a challenge. This is where social media accounts can be hacked with posts being manipulated, deleted, or added without your permission.  Make sure you develop a social media usage policy, limit responsibility, and monitor your social media accounts.  

2. Let’s state the obvious: we are busy people. Our spouses may be in the field, TDY, or deployed while we have everything else to take care of, as well as our business. But a cybersecurity must is to frequently change your account passwords!  With our busy lifestyles, it can easily be forgotten. Over 80% of data breaches are due to stolen and/or weak passwords. Make sure to manage credentials to control access.  Never share credentials, use strong passwords, set up a reminder to change passwords every 2-3 months, and use a good password manager such as LastPass, dashlane, KeePass, and 1Password. 

3. MOS, DEERS, DITY, DFAC, OCONUS … as military spouses, we are used to acronyms.  Another acronym to add to your memory is POLP.  Always remember to follow the Principle of Least Privilege (POLP).  Restrict access for staff and vendors only to those who need it, and only give them enough access for them to do their work.  If they do not need access, do not give it!

4. As you are starting out as a military spouse entrepreneur, you may assume that because your organization is small and just starting, it has a minimal risk of a cyber-attack. However, small organizations are more likely to be hit with spam, phishing, and email malware.  Over 48% of malicious email attachments are from office files.  If you receive an email from someone you do not know, do not click on any links or open any attachments.  Other tips for preventing spam, phishing, and email malware: take advantage of free resources such as Cofense and Phishing.org, never give your information on unsecured sites (URL’s that do not start with “https” or have a closed padlock icon next to the URL), install software updates and firewalls, and ignore pop-ups.  

5. Technology can be amazing.  Being able to link your phone with your watch and your camera means that you will never miss a call from your spouse while they are away.  While the Internet of Things (IoT) can be convenient, it can also leave you vulnerable.  About 90% of IoT attacks are through routers and connected cameras. Make sure to use two-factor authentication with strong passwords and keep software up to date. You should only connect to secure networks and use a VPN, turn off cameras and microphones that you are not using, and only connect devices that need to be connected.  

While we wish that the internet and technology completely safe, there will always be the possibility of a cyber-attack. Big or small, it is best to be prepared and secure in our business for anything. These simple and effective tips can help you stay safe online.
